PROJECT: DIY SolarFast Sun Prints on Paper

a project to create stunning artwork using the power of the sun and Jacquard Solarfast

Create stunning photographic-style prints using Jacquard SolarFast dye and lightweight paper. The sun does the magic — just add creativity!

You’ll Need:

  • Jacquard SolarFast dye (any colour) – purchase HERE
  • Watercolour paper or printmaking paper (avoid glossy or heavily textured types)
  • Foam brush or sponge – purchase HERE
  • Found objects (leaves, lace, stencils, cut-out shapes)
  • Clear acrylic sheet or plastic wrap
  • Gloves and a protected workspace
  • Access to direct sunlight

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Workspace
Work in low light or indoors away from sunlight. Lay down a protective surface and put on gloves.
  2. Apply the Dye
Use a foam brush to coat your paper evenly with SolarFast dye. Don’t soak it — just a thin, even layer.
  3. Arrange Your Design
Immediately place your objects or stencils on top of the dyed paper. Use a clear acrylic sheet or plastic wrap to hold everything flat and in place.
  4. Expose to Sunlight
Carefully move your setup outside. Let the paper sit in full sunlight for 10–20 minutes. The dye will develop where it’s exposed and stay light where the objects block the sun.
  5. Reveal the Print
Remove the objects and enjoy your solar print! You can rinse it briefly to stop development, though this is optional on paper.

When working with SolarFast Dyes, SolarFast Wash (available HERE)removes undeveloped dye from prints and reduces the risk of backstaining during washing. This is especially important for preserving white areas and highlights when making photographic prints on fabric or paper.

Why It’s Great:

  • A simple intro to photo-reactive art without a darkroom.
  • Works beautifully for cards, posters, fabrics or wall art.
  • Fun for all ages — and completely customisable.
